The Rockefeller Foundation and the ThaiHealth Foundation in Pattaya, Thailand during the World Conference on Health Promotion conferred a remarkable award in Health Promotion Practice from the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) to a Filipino Physician, Dr. Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III. Dr. Lucero-Prisno who teaches with the Department of Public Health and Policy of the School of Medicine is the first Filipino and youngest laureate in the history of this award given every three years. Headed by Professor Vivian Lin of the World Health Organization, he was chosen by a reputable international panel of experts in health promotion among other nominees. He was duly honored for his outstanding contribution in gathering evidence and translating research to policy, advocacy and actions in the global maritime industry thus benefiting the occupational group of 1.5 million international seafarers, a big percentage of which come from the Philippines. Because of his efforts, HIV/AIDS, stress and mental health, welfare, compensation and benefits, impact of piracy, infectious diseases and health promotion were all integrated in the Global Health Agenda through a maritime health research. In addition, his work has been recognized through many international and national awards he has received including The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines in 2009 in the field of global health and maritime health. He is known in the international health community for his work in a number of global health issues.
