First Year Death Anniversary of Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas Commemorated

It has been a year since Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas was slain in the line of duty. On March 1, 2017, the physician under the Department of Health’s (DOH) Doctors to the Barrios Program was shot dead while on his way home after treating patients in Sapad, Lanao del Norte.

The young physician’s death has yet to be resolved but his colleagues and the people of Sapad remember the commitment he has shown for his calling.

It was commemorated by the DOH with a mass being offered inside the Shrine of St. Lazarus in the DOH Compound in Manila.

They were joined by most of the Philippine medical community in various locations in the country.

"I am offering my most sincere thoughts and prayers to the bereaved family of Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas. The DOH is one with his family, friends, and colleagues in the Doctors to the barrios Program in seeking justice for his untimely death," DOH Secretary Duque said.

The Doctors to the Barrios Program of the DOH is part of the effort of the health department to bring healthcare to remote areas of the country where access to healthcare is critically needed by the rural population.

The program was given impetus by the late senator Dr. Juan Flavier who also served as one of these doctors I the rural areas in the 1960s.
